Man taken to hospital with head injury after collision on A69

A man has been taken to hospital after suffering from a head injury in a collision on the A69.

Northumbria Police were called to report a man who was injured while driving on the A69 near Wylam at around 11.45am on Thursday morning.

It was reported that a piece of granite had fallen from a passing vehicle which damaged the car and injured the driver.

Emergency services attended the scene where a man was then taken to Royal Victoria Infirmary to be treated for a head injury.

A diversion was in place as the road remained closed for most of the day.

Police have since confirmed that the road has reopened.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 11.43am to a person who was injured after an object went through the windscreen of their car.

"We dispatched a specialist paramedic and a double crewed ambulance. A male patient was taken to the RVI with a head injury."

At the time, Force spokesperson said: "Shortly after 11.45pm today (Thursday) we received a report a male had been injured while driving on the A69, near Wylam.

"It was reported a piece of granite had fallen from a passing vehicle, damaging a car and injuring its driver.

"Officers and emergency services are in attendance at the scene and the eastbound carriageway is currently closed at Heddon- on-the-Wall, with all vehicles being diverted through Horsley.

"Enquiries to locate the vehicle are ongoing."
