Man taken to hospital with head injuries after fight on Metro

A man was taken to hospital with head and facial injuries after a fight on the Metro.

Emergency services were called to Monkseaton Metro Station at just after 8pm on Wednesday.

The fight reportedly broke out on the Metro train before the people involved were ejected at the station.

A spokesperson from Northumbria Police said: "We were called to reports of a fight at Monkseaton Metro station at 8.10pm.

"It started on the Metro and then they were ejected from the train at Monkseaton station.

"There were no arrests made. One person did go to hospital after an ambulance was called."

It is not currently known how many people were involved in the fight.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 8.08pm to the Metro station at Monkseaton to reports of a male assaulted.

"We sent a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance. We took one male patient to hospital with head and facial injuries."

The incident closed platform one at Monkseaton until after 11pm as emergency services worked at the station.

During that time, passengers had to travel to West Monkseaton and back to Monkseaton to use platform two.

A spokesperson from Nexus said: "A male passenger was assaulted at Monkseaton Metro station in North Tyneside on Wednesday evening around 8.15pm.

“The police and an ambulance were called to the scene to treat the injured man, who was taken to hospital. The Metro station was closed for three hours as a result of the incident and it was re-opened at 11.15pm.

“Serious assaults are rare on Metro, but when they do occur we work closely with the police to find the culprits.

“All available CCTV will be passed to the police as evidence to support their investigation.

“If any other passengers saw what happened then they need to get in contact with Northumbria Police.”

Anyone who has any information, or who witnessed the incident, is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101.
