Lane one of three was blocked between the exit and entry sliproads, creating significant tailbacks.

An air ambulance attended the scene and was seen leaving just before 3.30pm.

A Gloucestershire Constabulary spokeswoman said: "A man has been taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol by the ambulance service. Closures which were in place on the M5 have since been lifted."
