Man taken to hospital following light-aircraft crash in Co Down

A man has been taken to hospital following a crash involving a light aircraft in Co Down.

The emergency services were called to the incident at the Ards Airfield, Portaferry Road, Newtownards, which took place shortly before 1pm on Tuesday, August 24.

The police and ambulance service are currently in attendance at the scene.

At least one person has been injured in the crash and has been taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be serious at this time.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police and other emergency services are currently in attendance at the scene of a crash involving a light aircraft at Newtownards airport.

"One man has been taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries which are not believed to be serious at this time."

A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 12.14 on Tuesday, 24 August 2021 following reports of an incident in the Newtonards area.

"In total NIAS despatched one Rapid Response Paramedic and one Emergency Crew to the scene.

"Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, one patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital by ambulance."
