Man taken to hospital after two lorry crash on A1 near Belford in Northumberland

The A1 has been closed for several hours in North Northumberland after a crash involving two lorries.

The road has been blocked at the junction for the B6349 for Belford between Alnwick and Berwick.

One man has been taken to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care hospital in Cramlington , although he is not thought to be seriously injured.

Two other people were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Drivers had been asked to follow a diversion route using the A697.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At around 1.11pm today we received a report of a collision involving two HGVs on the A1 near Belford, Northumberland.

"Officers and emergency services attended the scene and the road was closed while they were in attendance.

"The driver of one of the vehicles, a 52-year-old male, was taken to hospital as a precaution with injuries not believed to be serious at this time.

"The road remains closed in both directions and motorists asked to use the A697 at the earliest opportunity to avoid the scene."

The road was reopened after several hours at around 6.15pm.

The North East Ambulance Service sent two ambulances and transported one man to Cramlington hospital and treated two others at the scene.
