Man taken to hospital after 'motorbike lands on him' following Heaton crash

A motorbike "landed on top" of the driver after a crash near a Newcastle Sainsbury's store, a witness said.

The injured driver was taken to hospital after the freak incident near the Heaton branch.

A horrified witness felt "sick" when the bike landed on the driver, who suffered multiple injuries.

"A car went to turn into Sainsbury's but must not have seen the motorbike," claimed the onlooker.

"They clipped the man on the bike, his bike went into the air and landed on top of him.

"He was lying on the floor until paramedics came and gave him gas and air."

Northumbria Police is appealing for witnesses to the May 27 incident outside the Etherstone Avenue store.

Paramedics were the first on the scene after a 999 call at around 5.10pm

"We dispatched two double crewed ambulances and a specialist paramedic. One patient was transported to the RVI," added a North East Ambulance Service spokesperson.

The man's current condition isn't known.

However, Northumbria Police - who were called by the ambulance service around 10 minutes later - said his injuries weren't life threatening.

A force spokesperson added: “Any witnesses to the collision are asked to contact us via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website quoting log 880 270520.”
