A man was taken to hospital after Lucozade was thrown into his face in Stockport.

Emergency services were called to a row of shops on Bramhall Lane in Davenport just after 6pm on Tuesday after what was a reported possible acid attack.

A man, believed to be in his 30s, was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital by ambulance crews.

Later investigations revealed the unknown substance to be Lucozade.

The scene was taped off while investigation work was carried out.

Basic tests conducted by hazmat-trained firefighters revealed the substance was 'slightly alkaline'.

GMP have since confirmed the substance was Lucozade and the man is uninjured.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 6.10pm to reports of someone having had an unknown substance thrown in their face.

"We sent one engine from Stockport to the scene.

"On arrival firefighters found one man of roughly 30 years of age who said he had had an unknown substance thrown in his face and administered copious amounts of water to flush his face.

"Hazmat firefighters conducted basic tests on scene which found the substance to be slightly alkaline.

"The casualty was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital."

The North West Ambulance Service added: "We were called at 6.05pm to a shop on the street. One patient was taken to hospital."

GMP said the incident happened following a 'disturbance'. Enquiries are ongoing.
