Man taken to hospital after huge police presence descends on residential street in Walker

A man was taken to hospital for treatment after police responded to reports of a fight in Walker.

Officers were called to Birds Nest Road at around 7.30pm on Saturday night to reports of two people fighting in the street.

When officers arrived they found the two men but quickly distinguished no fight had taken place.

Instead, one of the men was found to be high on drugs and was resisting police officers' attempts to interact with him.

Back-up was requested with no less than six police vehicles spotted at the scene while paramedics were also in attendance.

After calming the man down, officers left the man in the hands of the North East Ambulance Service and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for medical treatment.

Northumbria Police confirmed no arrests were made after establishing no crime had been committed.

A spokeswoman said: "We were called to Birds Nest Road at 7.27pm last night to anonymous reports of two men fighting.

"When they arrived at the scene they found one man was high on drugs and was resisting officers.

"The man under the influence of drugs was taken to the RVI in Newcastle for treatment.

"Officers do not believe a fight took place and no arrests were made."
