Man taken to hospital after getting into difficulty in sea off Tynemouth Longsands beach

A man has been rescued by emergency services after getting into difficulty off the coast of Tynemouth.

Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade and Cullercoats RNLI were called to the scene at around 6.12pm on Saturday by the Coastguard.

Upon arrival, crews found a man in the sea off Tynemouth Longsands who was in need of medical attention.

Further assistance was required by police, while the air ambulance was also dispatched as part of a multi-agency response.

The man was pulled from the sea and helped back to shore by lifeboat volunteers before being passed onto paramedics.

He was then taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital, in Cramlington, for further treatment.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called at 6.12pm to a report of a man in difficulty at Tynemouth Longsands.

"We dispatched an ambulance crew, three Hazardous Area Response Teams and requested assistance from a doctor on the air ambulance.

"We transported one patient to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital by road ambulance."

The incident came just hours after a paddleboarder was rescued after being blown offshore by strong winds in Tynemouth.
