Man taken to hospital after falling into river from Wearmouth Bridge

A man who fell from Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland was rescued from the water and taken to hospital.

On Tuesday, police received a report of a man who had fallen into the River Wear from the bridge.

Emergency services arrived at the scene and the man was brought to safety.

The North East Ambulance Service dispatched double crew ambulances and two vehicles from its Hazard Area Response Team.

The 57-year-old was then taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.

A force spokesperson said: “Shortly before 4.30pm yesterday we received a report a male had fallen from the Wearmouth Bridge.

"Officers and emergency services attended the scene and a 57-year-old male was brought to safety and taken to hospital for treatment.”

A spokesperson from North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 4.29pm to a person in the water near the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland.

"We despatched two double crew ambulances and two vehicles from Hazard Area Response Team.

"A male was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital."
