Man taken to hospital after falling from rocks during climb on South Shields coastline

A man was taken to hospital with a foot injury after falling from rocks at the coast.

The man fell shortly after 1am on Saturday, whilst climbing Marsden Rock which is a rock formation in Marsden, South Shields.

Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team alongside the South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) and the North East Ambulance Service all attended the incident.

Coastguard officers carried the stretcher over the rocks and the casualty was taken to the lifeboat.

Once on land, the man was taken to South Tyneside Hospital with a foot injury.

Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team said: "We were called out during the night to assist the ambulance service with a person who had fallen whilst climbing Marsden Rock.

"As we arrived on scene with South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) the casualty was being treated by paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust for leg injuries.

"It was deemed the safest method of extraction from the beach was by sea so we requested both lifeboats from Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat.

"Coastguard officers carried the stretcher over the rocks to the waiting inshore lifeboat where he was transferred to the all-weather lifeboat for transport to the ferry landing at South Shields.

"In all coastal emergencies dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 1.13am this morning to reports of a person injured from a fall at Mardsen Rock.

"We sent two Hazardous Area Response Team resources and an ambulance and transported one male patient with a foot injury to South Tyneside Hospital."
