Man taken to hospital after driver crashes into Sunderland tanning shop

A man has been taken to hospital after a driver ploughed into a tanning salon in Sunderland .

Northumbria Police was called to the scene of the crash on Ryhope Road in Grangetown at 9.15am on Tuesday.

Footage circulating on social media shows a driver reversing a car from the shop before re-entering the road and fleeing police officers.

A man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries as a result of the crash, and inquiries are ongoing to track down the driver.

Detective Sergeant Andy Richardson, of Northumbria Police’s southern CID, said: “At 9.15am today (Tuesday), police received a report of a collision on Ryhope Road, Sunderland.

“It was reported that a vehicle had mounted the kerb and driven through the front of the Tan Solo premises before making off.

“A male has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

"Inquiries are ongoing to trace the driver. The vehicle believed to have been involved has been located."
