Man taken to hospital after crash on A19 near Sunderland

A man has been taken to hospital after being involved in a crash on the A19 near Sunderland.

Emergency services were called to a collision on the A183 slip road of the A19 southbound shortly after 3pm on Thursday (October 4).

Police and ambulance crews arrived at the scene to find the collision had involved one vehicle with the road subsequently closed off to traffic.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Shortly after 3pm today (Thursday) we received a report of a one-vehicle collision on the A183 slip road on the A19 southbound near Sunderland.

“A male driver has been taken to hospital. The road has since been reopened.”

North East Ambulance Service also confirmed their presence at the scene with the injured man requiring assistance from two vehicles before being transported to Sunderland Royal Hospital.

A spokesman said : "We were called at 3:09pm to a road traffic collision at the junction of the A19 and A183 in Sunderland.

"We dispatched two vehicles from our hazard area response team and a double crewed ambulance.

"One patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital. "
