Man taken to hospital after crash causes traffic chaos in Sunderland city centre

A man has been taken to hospital after a crash caused chaos in Sunderland city centre.

Emergency services were called to the two-vehicle collision close to the Empire Theatre off St Michaels Way just after 11am on Sunday.

Officers from Northumbria Police closed the roads in the area, near the roundabout, while paramedics and the fire service worked at the scene.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 11.15am to a two-vehicle road traffic collision on High Street West in Sunderland.

“We dispatched two crews from our hazardous area response team and a double-crewed ambulance.

“We have transported a male patient to Sunderland Royal Hospital.”

The nature of the man's injuries are currently unknown.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that three engines were sent to the collision.

There were reports of heavy delays throughout the city centre as a result of the crash.

Queues were forming on St Michaels Way, Silksworth Row and Livingstone Road as traffic approached the roundabout and there were also reports of delays on nearby Chester Road.
