Man taken to hospital after car crashes into tree on A189 Spine Road leaving road closed

A man was rescued from a car after crashing into a tree off the A189 Spine Road.

Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway near the Annitsford roundabout just before 6am on Tuesday.

A car had left the road and crashed into a tree leaving one person trapped inside.

Firefighters from Gosforth worked with two crews from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service to rescue them from the car.

A number of ambulances were sent to the scene and the man was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) A&E with head injuries.

The road was closed northbound from the A1056 roundabout to the Annitsford roundabout near the Northumberland border.

Once the car had been recovered, the road reopened to drivers at around 7.45am.

Diversions were put in place by police along Killingworth Way to the A19 and along Great Lime Road, Weetslade Road and the B1321 during the closure.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 5.55am at the junction of the A189 and the A190 to a one-vehicle road traffic collision with a tree.

"Two Hazardous Area Response Teams, a clinical care manager and two ambulances were sent to the scene.

"A male patient was taken to the RVI A&E with head injuries."
