Man taken to hospital after being struck by bus on Chillingham Road in Heaton

A pedestrian was taken to hospital after being hit by a double decker bus in Heaton.

Emergency services were called to Chillingham Road , near to Meldon Terrace, after a Stagecoach bus collided with a 22-year-old man just before 9.30pm on Sunday.

A photo of the scene shows the number 62 bus to Killlingworth pulled over on the road with a smashed windscreen.

The man was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle and his injuries have been described as "minor".

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to 9.27pm on January 5 to a road traffic collision between a bus and a pedestrian.

"We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance and a rapid response paramedic.

"We transported a male pedestrian with a head injury to the RVI."

A spokesman for Stagecoach North East said: "At around 9.30pm on Sunday, January 5, a pedestrian was involved in an incident with one of our vehicles on Chillingham Road in Newcastle.

"Our immediate concerns are for the wellbeing of those involved.

"Safety is our absolute priority and we are continuing to assist police with their inquiries."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 9.37pm on Sunday, we received a report of a collision involving a bus and a male pedestrian on Chillingham Road, Newcastle.

"Emergency services attended and the 22-year-old pedestrian was taken to hospital as a precaution with minor injuries."
