Man taken to hospital after being shot in the legs on Springfield Road in west Belfast

A man was taken to hospital last night after a shooting in west Belfast.

Police attended the scene on the Springfield Road on Monday night.

It is understood that the victim was shot a number of times in the legs, Belfast Live reports.

A passing ambulance crew heard the shots and saw the man lying on the pavement.

A police spokesman confirmed that they attended the scene.

He said: "Police in west Belfast are currently at the scene of a shooting incident in the Springfield Road area.

"A man is in hospital receiving treatment following the incident which was reported to police at around 7.45pm on Monday 22nd July.

"There are no further details at this early stage and police enquiries are ongoing."

An ambulance service spokesman told Belfast Live: "One of our crews was on the Springfield Road at around 6.40pm.

"They heard a number of gunshots. They then saw a man lying on the pavement.

"They tended to him and he was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital."

Sinn Fein Councillor Claire Canavan told Belfast Live that it’s a busy road and a built-up area.

She said: “We condemn this shooting that’s happened in a built-up area in broad daylight. It’s not what the community want. Anyone with any information should bring it to the police.”
