Man taken to hospital after being 'punched' in Sunderland street

A man was taken to hospital with head injuries after he was punched in a road in Sunderland.

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed they attended the incident on Saturday at around 3.39pm on Borough Road, in Sunderland.

It is thought the man had been punched and then had fallen in the road.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene before he was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Local residents reported seeing Northumbria Police officers seal off part of the road shortly after the incident occurred.

The road between Kwik Fit and the Golden Chef takeaway was closed by the emergency services while the incident was investigated.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 3.39pm to a report of a man who had been punched and fell in the road.

"We dispatched one ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and an air ambulance.

"We took one patient into the RVI who was suffering from head injuries."

Northumbria Police has been approached for comment on the incident.
