Man swaps coaching football in Chicago to be an ice cream man in St Helens

A man quit football coaching in America to "chase his dream" as an ice cream man.

Jordan Edwards, from Haydock, was originally studying in the USA and earned his UEFA coaching badges, but when the 26-year-old returned back home, he found his true calling and founded his own ice cream business called JJ's Ices. Jordan now says that he wakes up "excited for work" every day.

He told the ECHO: "I had a few jobs before this, which didn't really suit me much, but the main one was a football coach in Chicago. I was there for a good eight months out of the year.

"I absolutely love dealing with people on a daily basis. I came home and the jobs I was doing weren't right for me, I wanted something that made me excited like the coaching did. That's where the ice cream idea came in."

Jordan said that part of the reason he chose ice creams as a venture were the memories from his own childhood. He said: "For me as a kid, on a Sunday I'd always be looking forward to the ice cream man, and I think kids of today feel that same joy. But in Garswood I don't think they've had an ice cream man for years.

"For me, it's about the people, I get to drive about, park outside someone's house and talk to people, start to finish it's just dealing with people and you get to build a rapport with people."

Jordan said he chose his ice cream patch based on the strong sense of community, he added: "The reason I chose those areas, Moss Bank, Billinge and Garswood, is just because the community there is so nice. They are just really nice people, I used to go on walks around Car Mill, next to Moss Bank, and every time the people were just so happy."

Jordan said that there is "nothing he doesn't enjoy" about his new job and he aims to build up a good round and get to know the people and build loyal customers. He added: "For now I'm sure what the end goal is, but I'm happy at the moment, getting to know people and becoming a part of these wonderful communities."
