Man suffers serious injuries after gang of seven people armed with machete try to steal his Mercedes outside Asda

A man has suffered serious injuries after he was ambushed by a machete-wielding gang in an attempted carjacking.

Police were called to Old Church Street in Newton Heath at around 11.40pm on Friday night (August 20) after reports of an attempted armed robbery.

Seven "unknown offenders" armed with a machete had tried to steal a Mercedes whilst the driver was inside.

An eyewitness said the incident happened outside Asda.

They were unsuccessful in their attempts and fled the scene, police said.

During the incident, the male driver of the Mercedes sustained serious injuries.

He was taken to hospital where he remains for treatment.

Police have launched an investigation into the attempted carjacking and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information.

So far, no arrests have been made

A spokesperson for GMP said: "Police were called around 11.40pm on Friday 20 August 2021 to a report of an attempted armed robbery on Old Church Street, Manchester.

"Officers attended and enquiries established seven unknown offenders, armed with a machete, had attempted to steal an occupied Mercedes.

"The offenders failed to take the vehicle and subsequently fled the scene.

"During the robbery, the male driver, sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital where he remains.

"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."
