Man suffers major injuries after multiple vehicle M6 crash

A man in his 50s was reported to have suffered "major trauma-related injuries" in a crash involving multiple vehicles on the M6 in the early hours of today (Friday).

Emergency services were called at 4.16am to reports of a collision involving two HGVs, a white panel van and a silver Mercedes.

It happened between junction 20 (Lymm interchange for M56) and junction 19 (Knutsford) on the M6 southbound.

The driver of the Mercedes, a man in his 50s, was reported to have suffered serious injuries and was one of three people taken to hospital after the crash.

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said: "Three ambulances, an advanced paramedic and a response vehicle, went the to scene of a multi-vehicle collision.

"Three patients were taken to hospital, with one of those suffering major-trauma related injuries."

The section of motorway where the collision occurred remained closed because of a large diesel spillage, leading to lengthy delays and several miles of congestion.

Authorities said they expected the M6 southbound to remain closed for the rest of this morning and possibly longer because of damage to the central barrier and the fuel spillage that will need clearing.

Highways England traffic officers and North West Motorway Police are on scene.

Diversions were put in place and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
