Man fighting for life after falling from Redheugh Bridge onto Newcastle Quayside

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after falling 20 metres from the Redheugh Bridge onto the road below.

Emergency services were called just after 3pm on Sunday to concerns for the welfare of a man on Newcastle's Quayside.

Officers attended and discovered the man had fallen from the Redheugh Bridge and had landed on Skinnerburn Road.

A member of the public administered CPR to the man before paramedics arrived at the scene.

The Great North Air Ambulance was also dispatched to Newcastle's Quayside.

The man received treatment at the scene before being transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with "life-threatening" injuries.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We received a call at 3.04pm to reports that a patient had fallen from the Redheugh Bridge.

"Police advised us that a member of the public at the scene had started administering CPR in the four minutes before we arrived.

"We dispatched the air ambulance, a hazardous area response team and two ambulances to the scene.

"The patient was transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for further treatment."

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Shortly after 3pm today (Sunday) we received a report of concern for the welfare of a male on Skinnerburn Road, Newcastle.

"Officers attended and found a man had fallen from the Redheugh Bridge and landed on the road below, suffering life-threatening injuries.

"Emergency services are at the scene."
