Man suffers life-changing injuries after 'tombstoning' near popular beach

A man has suffered life-changing injuries after 'tombstoning' into the sea near a popular coastal resort in Swansea, according to the coastguard rescue team.

The Mumbles Lifeboat RNLI said they were called to an incident between Langland Bay and Limeslade which had taken place shortly after midday on Saturday, April 3.

Posting on Facebook, they said a man had suffered multiple fractures and injuries after jumping from a great height into the sea below, also known as tombstoning.

Two RNLI Lifeboat crews from the Mumbles Inshore Lifeboat, The Mark Lott, were called to reach the casualty and Mumbles Coastguard Cliff rescue team, Coastguard Rescue Helicopter and Wales Air Ambulance also attended.

The man was then transported to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

On Twitter, Mumbles Coastguard Cliff Rescue team described the man's injuries as "life-changing" and said that he "nearly paid the ultimate price".

They also confirmed that three coastguard teams, two lifeboats, two helicopters and South Wales Police also attended the incident.

The RNLI said that the current condition of the casualty is unknown and their thoughts are with him and his family.

Lifeboat Deputy Coxswain James Bolter said: "We really are so grateful to the person with the Cliff casualty who immediately called for help. This was a very serious incident. We hope all turns out well for the casualty."

He added: "The Bank Holiday weekend combined with the easing of lockdown has meant a very busy Easter for the RNLI.

"We would advise anyone going near the water to ensure they check tides, weather and carry a means of calling for help. Remember if you do fall in the water the sea temperature is still incredibly cold. Stay calm, float to live, regulate breathing and make your closest route to safety."
