The 28-year-old man was reportedly assaulted outside his Tindale Street house in Muswellbrook about 7.30pm.

He suffered a fractured skull and lacerations to his face and arms.

He was treated at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital where he remained in a serious but stable condition on Sunday.

A crime scene was established at the Tindale Street home on Saturday night and officers from Hunter Valley Police District are continuing an investigation.

The circumstances as to how the man suffered his injuries are unclear, NSW Police said on Sunday.
