A man is recovering from a serious brain injury after being assaulted by a stranger in a one-punch attack at Stockton.
The 20-year-old man remains in hospital after the attack, which took place on Mitchell Street about 8.30pm on Friday.
Police were told the victim and two friends were outside a licensed venue when an unknown man approached them. The man then became involved in a verbal altercation with the 20-year-old.
A police spokesperson said the unknown man then punched the 20-year-old in the face before fleeing the scene.
The 20-year-old was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment in a serious condition. He suffered bleeding on the brain and is currently recovering from his injuries.
Officers from Newcastle City Police District were notified and have commenced an investigation into the incident, but the attacker remains at large.
The offender was described to police as being of Caucasian appearance and aged in his late 20s to early 30s. He is believed to be between 170cm and 175cm tall, with a muscular build and tattoos behind his ear and neck.
The police spokesperson said it was understood the offender and the victim were not known to each other.
