Man stranded on a rock on eastern Victorian beach rescued by police helicopter

A man has been rescued by a police helicopter in eastern Victoria after being stranded on a rock while fishing Monday afternoon.

The 56-year-old man from Mitcham was fishing in Tarwin Lower, about 200 metres from shore at Bear Gully, when the tide rose around the rock, and he was unable to return to the beach.

He became stranded at 3:30pm after fishing for about four hours.

His friend, who was on the beach at the time, called emergency services.

Police Air Wing rescued the man by winching him into the helicopter.

The man was assessed by paramedics but was not in need of treatment.
