Man still in hospital with 'life-changing' injuries following A1 crash

A man remains in hospital after suffering "life-changing" injuries in a serious multi-vehicle crash on the A1.

Emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway between Swalwell and Lobley Hill to a collision believed to involve a motorbike, a van and two cars on Sunday.

One person was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle by ambulance after suffering head injuries in the crash just before 1.40pm.

Northumbria Police said at the time that the person was believed to have "life-changing injuries, but not life threatening".

On Tuesday, police revealed the man remains in hospital receiving treatment after sustaining suspected back injuries.

They reiterated his condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Two lanes were blocked for around two hours between junctions 69 and 68 as a result of the collision causing chaos for drivers in the region.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We got called to an initial road traffic collision involving a van and a motorcyclist.

"We dispatched an ambulance, our paramedic car and one Hazardous Area Response Team crew.

"We transported one person to the RVI with head injuries and pelvic and neck pain."
