Man stabs himself with knife following hit and run and attempted hijacking incident in Tallaght

A man has inflicted a number of knife wounds to himself following a hit and run collision and attempted hijacking of a car in South Dublin.

In a tense stand-off in Tallaght, the man was hospitalised after he used the weapon to injure himself as he was approached by Gardai and the Armed Support Unit.

The ASU were on hand to use non-lethal force to help restrain the individual and Gardai also administered first aid to the man.

He was later rushed to Tallaght Hospital where he is continuing to recover but his injuries have been described as "not life threatening".

The initial hit and run collision took place on Cookstown Way in Tallaght shortly before 9pm.

One of the cars involved in the incident came to a stop after it collided with a bollard.

The driver of the car fled the scene on foot before attempting to hijack a separate car at knifepoint just a short distance away at Watergate Estate.

Significant damage was caused to the other car involved but the second driver, a woman in her 30s, escaped without injury.

Local detectives and Armed Support Unit members were alerted immediately about both incidents.

In a follow up operation, the man involved was located at nearby Rosebank Estate where he was armed with a knife.

Gardai said that they are appealing for witnesses to come forward and added that: "The investigation is ongoing and further updates will follow."
