Man stabs himself with knife after hit and run and attempted hijacking incident in Tallaght, south Dublin

A man inflicted knife wounds on himself after a stand off with gardai following a hit and run and attempted hijacking of a car in Dublin.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses after the incident which occurred at around 9pm in Tallaght, south Dublin on Monday night.

Dublin Live reports that a collision involving two cars took place on Cookstown Way, where one of the cars involved in the incident came to a stop after it collided with a bollard.

The driver of the car fled the scene on foot before attempting to hijack a separate car at knifepoint just a short distance away at Watergate Estate.

Significant damage was caused to the other car involved but the second driver, a woman in her 30s, escaped without injury.

Local detectives and Armed Support Unit members were alerted immediately about both incidents.

In a follow up operation, the man involved was located at nearby Rosebank Estate where he was armed with a knife.

As Gardai attempted to approach the man, he inflicted a number of knife wounds to himself.

The ASU used non-lethal force to help restrain the individual and gardai administered first aid.

He was later rushed to Tallaght Hospital where he is continuing to recover but his injuries have been described as "not life threatening".

Gardai added that: "The investigation is ongoing and further updates will follow."
