A man was released from police custody after citing self-defense in a fatal stabbing early Sunday in Lawndale on the West Side.

Officers driving in the 2900 block of West Harrison Street at 2:25 a.m. saw two men on the ground fighting, according to Chicago police.

One man stood up and attempted to flee while the other laid on the ground with a stab wound to the chest, police said.

Travis Lofton, 39, identified the man who stabbed him before he was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A police spokesperson on Tuesday said the arrested man was released from custody after claiming he acted in self-defense.
