Man stabbed to death in front of his father in East London while trying to stop moped thieves

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was stabbed to death outside his home in front of his father.

The father, 46 and son, 27, were confronting a gang outside their home in Gibbfield Close, Chadwell Heath, east London, who were attempting to steal a moped.

After hearing a disturbance at around 1.35am on Tuesday, the two men rushed outside.

The men were stabbed in an altercation and the thieves fled the scene without the moped.

The victims were taken to an east London hospital where the younger man was pronounced dead in the early hours of Wednesday. Officers know the identity of the deceased but are awaiting formal identification.

His father remains in hospital, although his injuries are said to not be life-threatening.

The investigation is being led by Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Packer of the Homicide and Major Crime Command. DCI Packer said:

"Gibbfield Close is a residential street and while there would not have been many people out and about at the time of this attack, it was a warm night and people would have had their windows open.

"I am appealing to anyone who heard, or subsequently saw, anything suspicious to come forward and speak to police."

Any witnesses or anyone with any information that could assist the investigation is asked to call the incident room on 020 8345 3865. To remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or visit crimestoppers-uk.org.
