Man stabbed several times in hand and arm in Sean McDermott Street attack

A young Brazilian man is recovering in hospital after he was stabbed several times in the hand and arm in the city centre.

The 24-year-old was walking to work with his wife when he was attacked on Sean McDermott Street Lower on Thursday evening.

It is understood the couple were approached by a number of youths who initially asked for a cigarette.

The youths then became aggressive and one of them then lunged at the man with a knife.

The man's mother told the Irish Independent he used his hands to block other vital organs.

She said: "In this confrontation, he had his left arm cut, his thumb, and his left hand that he used the most as a kind of shield to try to defend himself against the blows of the knife."

The youths then took the victim's backpack but this was later recovered by the man and his wife.

The victim was later taken to the Mater Hospital before being transferred to Connolly Hospital for treatment.

The man's brother was killed in a knife attack in Brazil two years ago.

A garda spokesman told Dublin Live they were investigating last week's attack.

He said: "Gardai responded to an assault on Thursday 12 September at approximately 10:48pm on Sean MacDermott Street Lower following an altercation on the street.

"A male in his 20s was taken to hospital to receive treatment following the incident. Investigation ongoing."
