A man who stabbed a driver in the neck for “taking too long” at an Asda petrol station has been jailed.
Jack Oldfield, 26, was imprisoned for eight years at Derby Crown Court after pleading guilty to wounding with intent and three counts of carrying a bladed weapon following the attack on 30-year-old Robert Taylor in July.
CCTV showed the moment Oldfield confronted and stabbed Mr Taylor in front of PC Kim Wheldon, an off-duty police officer who had just finished refuelling her car at the garage in Derby.
Oldfield was annoyed at waiting in a queue as he felt Mr Taylor was taking too long to choose a drink, Derbyshire Constabulary said.
Following an argument between the pair, Oldfield pulled a pocket from his knife and stabbed Mr Taylor in the neck. PC Wheldon detained Oldfield and called for backup.
Oldfield attempted to hide the knife and left an imitation handgun in a police car in a bid to hide it.
PC Wheldon said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack on an innocent man who had popped out to the shop that July evening.”
She added: “It was only good fortune that the injuries Mr Taylor suffered were not more serious.
“Although these kinds of incidents are rare, Oldfield’s sentence reflects the fact that the courts take them extremely seriously.
“I’d like to offer my best wishes to Mr Taylor, on behalf of the force, and hope that he can find some comfort in knowing that Oldfield is off our streets.”
