Man stabbed aboard local train in Maharashtra's Thane

THANE: A 38-year-old commuter suffered serious injuries after he was stabbed multiple times by an unidentified fellow commuter following a spat between the two aboard a running suburban train between Thane and Mumbra, the railway police informed on Tuesday.

The police said the incident occurred Monday morning when the victim who works in a building construction site was travelling back home to Kalwa from Mulund with his colleagues after they were given a day off from work by their employer. They were travelling in the off peak direction so the train was nearly empty.

Initial probe revealed the victim and the unidentified accused had some argument at Mulund station while boarding the train which is likely to have triggered the assault.

“The victim and his friends were travelling in the same coach but on different footboards of the Kalyan-bound local train when he apparently got into some argument with a fellow commuter. The argument soon escalated into violence with the accused fishing out a sharp object and stabbing the victim repeatedly. After fellow passengers raised alarm, his friends rushed to his help by which the accused had escaped,” informed senior inspector Pandhari Kande at the Thane railway police.

While the injured victim alighted from the train along with his friends at Mumbra, the accused is learnt to have travelled further and got down at Diva, police said. The victim was rushed to local hospital for where he was rushed to Sion hospital where he is recuperating.
