Man spent four years turning garden shed into American diner with its own Statue of Liberty

A man has transformed his garden shed into an American diner complete with its very own Statue of Liberty that he bought on eBay.

Carl Cowpland has spent the last four years giving his shed an incredible makeover and kitting it out with all things American themed, from a jukebox to a chequered booth, bunting and bar signs.

The 48-year-old from Wigan, first got the idea during a trip to Portugal with his wife Adele, 53, where they went to an American diner.

Carl, who has also been on a number of holidays to the USA over the years, sought to recreate this theme by making a makeshift diner of his own in his back garden.

Carl told the ECHO: "It was a normal bar before with bare walls and the odd picture here and there.

"We wanted to do something a bit different."

The first thing Carl bought for the diner was a seating area off eBay at a cost of around £200 and it soon "escalated from there."

He continued to find bargains online and from local sellers, including a model of the Statue of Liberty which his colleague picked up from London.

The diner is also kitted out with its own outdoor bar and hot tub, while a pink car themed sofa is propped up against the wall outside which cost between £300-400.

Carl said: "When my friends come around they always say to me 'you've got too much time on your hands.'

"It's been a labour of love really. When I've seen something I've bought it."

The indoor and outdoor bars are both stocked with a range of different beverages, while signs that read "hotdog", 'hamburgers", "Coca-cola" and "Carl's bar" adorn the walls.

There's also a darts board, jukebox and TV inside to keep Carl and Adele entertained.

The couple made the most of the space during lockdown by holding virtual pub nights in there with friends over Zoom.

They're looking forward to spending many more nights in there with friends and family this summer.
