Man spent five hours on roof of house throwing things at people and forcing neighbours to stay indoors

A man has come down from the roof of a house near Tameside Hospital after a five-hour stand-off with police.

Officers were called to Mossley Road in Ashton-under-Lyne on Thursday morning following concerns for the welfare of a man.

Witnesses say he was stood on top of the property throwing things into the street and at officers.

Mossley Road was closed in both directions at around 11.15am. Those living nearby were asked to stay indoors.

Traffic and buses were diverted and people were urged to avoid the area.

Specialist police negotiators were drafted in and spent several hours trying to talk the man down.

The incident is understood to have ended safely at around 4.40pm.

Ambulance and fire crews were also called to the scene.

Inspector Lee Derbyshire, of GMP Tameside North, posted on Facebook earlier on Thursday: "Officers currently dealing with an ongoing incident which has required us to close Mossley Road near to Tameside Hospital, access to the hospital remains open but please bear this in mind re travel times and avoid Mossley Road unless essential."
