Man spends year transforming huge warehouse into amazing Christmas wonderland

A young man has gone above and beyond to spread cheer this Christmas.

Shane Lucas, who is autistic, has taken on the mammoth task of decorating an entire warehouse to raise money for charity.

The 24-year-old from Abergavenny planned the project throughout the year until it was unveiled at the start of December.

Complete with fairy lights, snow and Santa himself, the building is covered top to bottom in festive fun.

Shane's dad, Darren Lucas, said he was "amazed" at what his son had achieved this year and hopes it will help spread awareness about the needs of people with autism.

The 54-year-old said: "He went through school with no help or support for his autism and he struggled very badly. He feels there are people in school now who feel the same way he did so he wants to raise autism awareness. He's put on a banner up which says 'let's end discrimination against autism'."

The family had previously enjoyed decorating their home in time for Christmas, setting up a particularly impressive display in 2019 to raise money for Ebbw Vale boy Jacob Jones who was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma in 2017.

Darren said the display helped them raise thousands of pounds, but that their one-way street struggled with the traffic as people travelled to take a look.

He said using the warehouse meant Shane could go bigger and better so more people could enjoy it

"He's got mascots up there and he's bought all the costumes," Darren said. "Santa's there, the Grinch is there, and a 25-foot Christmas tree. He's gone through a lot of work to get it off the ground. They've been working on it for about three months."

Though the finished project has turned out just as they'd hoped - if not, better - Darren said it took Shane a lot of hard work to pull it off.

Darren said: "He said he wanted to light up this warehouse and we thought it was impossible, it's not something that has been done before. We waited to see what would come out of it and he managed to put this together with his autistic volunteers. He had a couple of local businesses sponsor him. He's done an amazing job, it's massive.

"It was tough for him to do and at times he thought he wouldn't be able to carry on, but he said he had to keep going because he wanted to raise awareness. I've seen him cry and have meltdowns, what he's done is incredible."

Shane is raising money for autism charities in Wales and Nevill Hall hospital. There are sealed tins at the warehouse for people to donate as well as a GoFundMe page.

People are also being asked to bring a tin which will be donated to a local food bank. You can visit the warehouse at Unit 3, Hatherly Place, Abergavenny, NP7 7RL.
