Man spends £400 on Comic Con costume that took 'months' to make

A man from Newcastle upon Tyne has travelled all the way to Liverpool this weekend for Comic Con 2023.

Bradley Calvert and his cosplay sidekick Georgina Donnalley both attended the first day of Comic Con Liverpool with some very impressive costumes. Speaking to our Curiously reporter Jamie Greer, Bradley explained how long his costume took to create, and how much it cost.

The highly anticipated event is a regular convention for sci-fi fans, cosplayers, and comic book lovers. Liverpool's Comic Con is the North West's largest comic book and film fan convention.

It's also a great place to spot celebrity guests, with previous conventions including appearances from the stars of Stranger Things, The Vampire Diaries, Peaky Blinders and more. This year, Comic Con fans can expect appearances from Stranger Things stars Jamie Campbell-Bower, Grace Van Dien and David Harbour, as well as Doctor Who and House of the Dragon star Matt Smith.

The pair were dressed as 'Subject Delta' and the 'Little Sister' from the video game series BioShock with high hopes to win the prize money. Whoever is crowned winner of the Comic Con Liverpool 'Cosplay Competition' will get their hands on a £500 cash prize - but it doesn't come easy.

Speaking to our reporter, Bradley Calvert said: "You get the chance to win £500. This costume took me a couple of months to make and around £300-£400 to make."

Georgia Donnalley added: "It's very busy here, there's like 40,000 people, it's going to be gridlocked when we get stopped for pictures but that's what we've come here for."

Bradley often shares image of his cosplay outfits with Georgia via Instagram at @calvertcosplay. As seen in his Instagram bio, the pair 'focus on gaming characters, attending most Comic-Con style events around the north-east of the UK and sometimes further'.

When speaking about Liverpool Comic Con, Bradley said: "It's pretty big here, it's the biggest Comic Con I've been to, London is just too far for us."

Our Curiously reporters Jamie Greer and Corbyn John McCallum will be bringing you all the latest Comic Con updates from the best costumes to celebrity sightings. Our ECHO photographer will also be snapping the best outfits throughout the day.
