Man sparks serious incident after walking into police station with hand grenade

A man sparked a serious incident tonight after walking into a police station with a hand grenade.

A 20-metre cordon was erected outside Harpurhey Police Station in Manchester shortly after the member of the public strolled inside just before 6pm.

He told officers he had found the devise in his allotment, reports Manchester Evening News.

Nearby roads were closed and the grenade was moved outside before Bomb disposals experts from the Royal Logistic Corps were called to the scene.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said initial observations pointed to the device being a Second World War relic.

Nobody was evacuated, GMP said.

An officer at the scene advised that anyone who finds a similar device is urged to contact police rather than move it themselves.

He said: "What we’d say is leave it in place and then call us.

"It could endanger other people."

No arrests have been made.
