Man sparked police appeal after he got so drunk woman thought he'd been stabbed

A "lightweight" drinker who downed a cocktail of different drinks while out on the lash woke up with more than a hangover.

The man from Hull was shocked to discover his drunken antics resulted in him sparking a police appeal after a woman thought he had been stabbed.

The reveller was described by officers as "an injured man" who had been seen slumped in Hull city centre.

Celia Mackinder, 52, stumbled across him on her way to work on December 27 at around 6am and believed he told her he had "been stabbed", Hull Live reports.

Ms Mackinder was so fearful for the man's safety, she called police who launched an appeal with a picture of him in a bar, which was circulated on social media and in Hull Live.

But the real reason for his injuries were not as serious as the purported stab wound as the man has since confessed he had fallen over in his drunken state and had hurt his side while on the floor.

The man, who said he does not normally drink, says he mumbled something else to Ms Mackinder and she must have misheard.

He said: "I don't drink normally, I am a lightweight. I had six bottles [of beer] and a lot of vodka, Jägerbombs and some sambuca shots.

"It's quite embarrassing to go on a night out and the next minute it's all over Facebook with a picture from the police."

He added: "I was well drunk. I had gone to visit my brother at his house first for a few drinks and I don't no how I got in town.

"I left his [my brother's house] about 9pm so was in a state. It was just a misunderstanding and Celia didn't hear me properly and thought I said stabbed and I actually said sh****d."

The man says he wants to apologise to everyone for his drunken state which resulted in a three-day hangover.

He has also apologised for "scaring" Celia who was terrified about a potential knife man being on the loose.

"It was just an honest mix-up," he said.

"I guess they do sound a bit like each other and told Celia sorry like. I didn't want to scare her.

He added: "I can't really recall a lot about what happened, but no I wouldn't have stabbed - it was sh****d yes.

"However, I was drunk, so potentially, I could have said that to be honest. I have apologised to her - I was in a state."

Humberside Police have confirmed the "missing" man was found safe and well.
