Man spared jail after attacking his ex-partner and her new boyfriend

A woman suffered a bleed on the brain and her new partner lost two front teeth after they were attacked by her ex-boyfriend.

Nottingham Crown Court heard Robert Smith seemed to be smirking and smiling at them both in a Worksop club on December 23 last year.

The new boyfriend was drinking from a bottle when it appeared it was driven into his face and mouth by Smith, causing damage to his teeth.

Smith, 25, of White Avenue, Langold, Worksop, was moved outside where he was "jumping around and swinging blows", said Leanne Summers, prosecuting.

Smith hit his former partner, knocking her unconscious for five minutes. A CT scan at hospital revealed the bleed on her brain.

Sentencing Smith for grievous bodily harm and assault, causing bodily harm, the judge ordered he pay £1,200 compensation to the man, who is facing thousands of pounds worth of more dental work.

And he imposed a 12-month community order, nine-month drug rehabilitation requirement and 15 days on a rehabilitation activity requirement.

The judge took into account Smith had already spent seven months in custody on remand - the equivalent of a 14-month sentence.
