Man slashed the neck of his carer's son, accusing him of being rude to her

Former dustman David Cryer slashed his carer's son with a knife after accusing him of being rude, a court heard.

Cryer, who was cared for by Debbie Jones, accused George Lewis of "being rude to his mum all day", Bristol Crown Court heard yesterday (April 15, 2020).

In an altercation that followed, Cryer slid a knife over Mr Lewis' neck, causing a shallow wound which left a scar.

Cryer, 55, of Algars Drive in Iron Acton, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on April 6 last year.

Judge Julian Lambert jailed him for six months.

He told Cryer: "Knife crime is of grave concern to our society.

"Parliament has set minimum custodial sentences for those guilty of even threatening with a knife.

"This was knife crime.

"The man was left terrified and injured and the scar is still visible to his throat."

Alec Small, prosecuting via Skype due to coronavirus lockdown, said on April 6 last year Mrs Jones visited Cryer with her son.

The court heard that, suddenly, Cryer poked Mr Lewis, accusing him of being disrespectful to his mum.

Mr Small said there was "verbals from both sides" before Cryer held a cook's knife to Mr Lewis' neck and there was a stand-off for several minutes.

With that Cryer slid the ten-inch blade across Mr Lewis' neck, causing a four inch long wound, Mr Small said.

Police seized a bread knife and two knives with ten inch blades.

Cryer initially denied holding a blade to Mr Lewis' neck.

John Stokes, defending, read a letter from remorseful Cryer in which he said: "I am truly sorry for my behaviour when I injured George.

"I accept this was a serious crime."

Mr Stokes said Cryer had injured his back while working as a dustman and had not worked for 12 years.

He told the court Cryer suffered from anxiety and had been on anti-depressants as well as suffering from the loss of his mum, whom he had cared for for seven years.
