Man shot to death on South Side is identified

Jan. 08--A man fatally shot in the Princeton Park neighborhood late Wednesday has been identified by authorities.

Erskin Palm, 31, was pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m. Thursday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn after he was shot in the 9300 block of South LaSalle Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He died from multiple gunshot wounds, the office determined after an autopsy Friday.

Palm, of the 7700 block of South Laflin Street, was one of at least 11 people wounded in Chicago shootings between Wednesday afternoon and early Thursday.

The shooting took place at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said early Thursday. Officers found him on the sidewalk on South LaSalle with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to Christ Medical Center, initially in critical condition.

At the shooting scene early Thursday, police blocked off part of LaSalle south of 93rd Street with yellow tape. A smaller area on the street inside the crime scene was cordoned off with red tape. A dark blue car was parked on the side of the street with some of its doors wide open and its windows shattered.

Officers and detectives shined flashlights on the nearby road and sidewalk in search of evidence.

A group of neighbors stood near the tape. Some said they heard up to 20 gunshots and a woman screaming.

They all were confused by the shooting, they said.

"Why would you come this time of night, (in the) cold, and shoot up a car?" said one young man.
