Feb. 04--A man shot to death in the Humboldt Park neighborhood over the weekend has been identified as an Austin neighborhood man, authorities said Wednesday.
Floyd Hodges, 34, was pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m. Saturday at Mount Sinia Hospital following a shooting in the 1100 block of North Springfield Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Hodges lived in the 5500 block of West Gladys Avenue, according to the office.
The victim was shot to death around 10:45 p.m. Saturday when two people approached him. One of them fired shots at the man, then both ran away, police said.
The man was shot in the chest and groin and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said said.
Police found about 11 shell casings at the scene. Officers blocked off a part of Springfield Avenue south of Division as well as an alley where the attackers fled.
Late Satuday evening, a man in a red Blackhawks T-shirt stood next to the crime scene and watched the police officers. He said he was driving north on Springfield, south of Division, when he heard gunshots. He slammed on his brakes in the middle of the 1100 block of North Springfield when someone bolted across the street in front of his car.
As he continued north on Springfield, he noticed something in the middle of the street. "I thought it was a long bag lying in the street," he said.
But as he got closer, he recognized his brother's friend. He called 911.
"He'd make everyone laugh," he said. "I know he can't mess with nobody."
