WITH the police outside attempting to negotiate with him and his terrified family upstairs, an irrational and armed Kaillin James Clancy live streamed on Facebook some of the confrontations he was having with officers on the front lawn of a home at Maryland during a tense siege in July last year.
Armed with four knives, Clancy, now 31, was attempting to "induce the police to shoot him dead", repeatedly tapping the knives on the window and telling the police: "I want to die, I want to f---ing die".
And so when Clancy, a man with a long history of mental illness who had stopped taking medication, stepped away from that open bedroom window and closed the shutters, two police officers moved in closer.
A few moments later Clancy reappeared with a gel-blaster gun, styled to closely resemble a military-style machine gun, opened the shutters, kicked out the fly screen window and began firing at police.
A sergeant and constable who had been attempting to negotiate with Clancy looked up to see what they thought was a machine gun and immediately fled, believing they were about to be shot.
As they ran, Clancy shot the sergeant in the temple with a projectile and fired a number of rounds into the back of the constable's vest.
And then, as those police took cover and officers from across Newcastle swarmed into the area, Clancy spent the next 90 minutes screaming at police and intermittently attempting to shoot them with the gel-blaster gun. At one point Clancy said he was "gonna start stabbing motherf---ers" if police attempted to come into the home. It was a terrifying and incredibly tense siege that only ended when Clancy, in a moment of realisation that probably saved his life, decided to throw the gel-blaster gun and knives out of the window.
"I just realised I was carrying on like a f---wit," Clancy later told police when asked why he had ended the confrontation.
Clancy then walked from the house completely naked and was arrested.
He appeared in Newcastle Local Court via audio visual link from John Morony Correctional Centre on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to a string of offences relating to the siege, including firing a firearm in a manner likely to injure, armed with intent to commit indictable offence and assault police officer and occasion actual bodily harm.
He will next appear in Newcastle District Court in March to get a sentence date.
The confrontation with police had stemmed from an argument with his partner and Clancy had said he had grabbed the knives and shot at police in a bid to get them to shoot him.
