Man shot outside West Side alternative school, runs inside for help

March 01--Four people were shot in Chicago from Monday afternoon through early Tuesday, including a man who was shot around the corner from a West Garfield Park school and ran into the school for help, authorities said.

That man, age 23, was shot about 12:30 p.m. in the 4500 block of block of West Maypole Avenue, police said. Marconi Elementary Community Academy had been at 230 N. Kolmar Ave., but was closed in 2013, and replaced in fall 2015 with Camelot Academy West Garfield Park, an alternative school.

The man was shot in the back, a Fire Department spokesman said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital initially in serious-to-critical condition, and was in serious condition at the hospital, officials said.

The man was on Maypole avenue when someone came up and fired shots at the 23-year-old, hitting him, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a police spokeswoman. The man then ran to the school for help, she said.

The victim ran to the school and was given first aid by the school's executive director, while other staff called 911, a spokesman for the school said. The victim has no connection to the school, the spokesman said in an email.

In another shooting in the 6600 block of South Karlov Avenue about 1:47 p.m., someone shot a 27-year-old man who was the passenger in a car that crashed and injured two other people.

The driver kept going after the man was shot and got into a crash on the 4100 block of West Marquette Road. The man shot went to Advocate Christ Medical Center with wounds to his back and hand. He was listed in fair condition.

Two other people injured in the crash were taken to Holy Cross Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.

Police initially said the man who was shot had been driving the vehicle, but that information was later corrected.

In other shootings:

At 1:40 a.m. Tuesday, a 24-year-old man was shot in West Pullman, police said. He was in the 300 block of West 116th Street when he was shot in the leg. He went to Advocate Christ Medical Center; information on his condition was not immediately available.

At 10:30 p.m., an 18-year-old man was shot in the North Austin neighborhood, police said. He was in the 1500 block of North Leclaire Avenue when he was shot in the left hand. He went to West Suburban Medical Center in good condition.

Detectives were investigating.
