A 20-year-old man was shot near Provident Hospital Tuesday in Bronzeville on the South Side.

He was seen walking with another male about 1:12 p.m. in the 5000 block of South Forrestville Avenue when shots were fired, Chicago police said. Provident Hospital is located on that block.

The man was struck in the shoulder, and he walked into the hospital before being transferred to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition, police said.

A witness told officers she saw two males run from the alley after the gunshots, police said. One of them was seen throwing something into a dumpster in the 500 block of East 50th Place, and officers found a handgun there.

Security discovered that the 20-year-old was in possession of a handgun when he checked into the hospital, and he was taken into custody, police said. Charges are pending.

The two males who ran off are suspected to be involved in the shooting, and are not in custody, police said. Area Central detectives are investigating.
