Man shot dead in Waringstown, Co Down as main street closed

A man has been shot dead in Co Down on Monday evening.

The Main Street in Waringstown was closed after the incident.

It is understood to have occurred near a filling station at around 7.15pm, Belfast Live reports.

SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly said the local community is in shock following the killing.

The SDLP’s Justice Spokesperson has appealed for anyone who saw anything in the area at 10pm to come forward to police.

She said: “The local community is in shock this evening after the violent killing of a man in a shooting in Waringstown.

"This is a quiet, settled village and people are appalled that violence has been brought onto their streets.

"I would appeal to anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area at around 10pm this evening to come forward and assist police with their investigation.”

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police are at the scene of a shooting incident in the Main Street area of Waringstown. Main Street has been closed and diversions are in place.

"There are no further details at this time."

DUP Councillor Mark Baxter said: "I'm totally shocked to hear what has happened here tonight.

"My thoughts go out to those involved and anyone who has witnessed this.

"Waringstown is a very quiet residential area. People just go about their daily business. There'll be a dark cloud hanging over the village tonight."

His party colleague, MLA Carla Lockhart, added: “Police are dealing with a very serious incident here. They need time to deal with it, to investigate it, and anyone with any information should come forward. My thoughts are with the family at this stage.”

PSNI spokesman said tonight: “Police are at the scene of a shooting incident in the Main Street area of Waringstown. Main Street has been closed and diversions are in place. 
“There are no further details at this time.”

A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We received reports of a male bleeding in the Main Street area of Waringstown. We sent one crew. No one was taken from the scene."
