A 30-year-old man has died after being shot and killed at the front door of his western Sydney granny flat by two men who remain on the run.

The man was attacked at his Tregear property on Monday morning, police say, and suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and shoulder.

He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

Superintendent Trent King said the victim was known to police for drug offences and a woman was inside the granny flat at the time of the attack.

Supt King said police believe the attack was targeted, with the two intruders - who had their faces covered - still on the run.

He said the murder weapon was likely a large-calibre gun.

"Based on the crime scene, it appeared the incident occurred at the front door of the residence," Supt King told reporters on Monday.

"Everything is indicating at this stage of the investigation that it was a planned attack. Certainly on the basis of the injuries that have been sustained, it appears there was an intention to kill this person."
