A man was shot dead in West Belfast on Sunday night.

It happened in Lenadoon Avenue and PSNI and paramedics attended as officers worked to close off the area, Belfast Live reports.

Sadly, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detective Chief Inspector Michelle Shaw said: "We received a report at around 10pm that a man had been shot in a property in the Lenadoon Avenue area of the city.

“Officers attended, along with colleagues from Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. Sadly, a man has been pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our enquiries are at any early stage. However, I would appeal to anyone with information, or who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area around."

One source said: "The injured man is from a well known family in Lenadoon. He was originally from Turf Lodge and is 58 or 59. We were told two men burst in through the front door and shot him in front of his daughters. His family were on the street just after this happened and they said he was fighting for his life."

Mr Maskey, MP for West Belfast, said: "A man has been seriously injured in a shooting in Lenadoon tonight.

“My thoughts are with the family and friends of the man injured in this brutal attack.

“Local people are shocked and angry that anyone would carry out an attack like this when the community and the emergency services are facing the challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I condemn those responsible for this attack and they must be brought before the courts.

“A police operation is ongoing in the Lenadoon area and I would appeal to anyone with information on this shooting to bring it forward to the PSNI.”
